Scores

[1] Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATTB

C-G2; A-C2; T I-C3; T II-C3; B-F3. High clefs. Entire range, A-f’’. Initial pitches of textual phrases replicate or are modeled upon chant (App. 1) and permeate the imitative contrapuntal fabric. To provide unity similar motivic material accompanies “redemptoris,” “que pervia caeli,” “porta manes” and “ac posterius.” Victoria recognizes the fourfold structure of his model with full cadences after section I (“manes”) and section III (“genitorem”); section IV (“Virgo prius”) is set apart by use of breves for each syllable. The 2.p. begins with paired imitation between C/A and T II/B. Declamatory text setting combines syllabic and melismatic styles. Final F, b♭ signature.

[2] Tu quae genuisti

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
