Scores

[1] Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATBX

S-G2; Q-G2; A-C2; T-C3; B-C4. High clefs. Entire range, B♭-f’’. Chant (App. 1) normally appears intact at the beginning of phrases but is treated freely within a structure of overlapping phrases; except for the inclusion of semibreves in all voices for the initial textual phrase, chant assimilates the rhythmic gestures of other voices. Chant permeates the imitative contrapuntal fabric but is presented most consistently in the T. Text setting reflects a combination of syllabic and melismatic styles. Final F, b♭ signature.

[2] Tu que genuisti

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
