Scores

Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SATB

[S]-C1; [A]-C3; [T]-C4; [B]-F4. No evidence of chant. Homorhythmic texture dominates with brief contrasting imitative passages (e.g., mm. 4-6). Lassus articulates the second (“et stella maris”) and fourth (“virgo prius ac posterius Gabrielis”) textual phrases by a reduction of voices. Declamatory text setting primarily in syllabic setting with occasion succinct melismas prevails. A majority of the required pitch inflections (f♯ and e♭) is included in the manuscript. Final g, b♭ signature.
