Polyphonic ensemble SSATTB

C I-C1; C II-C1; A-C3; T I-C4; T II-C4; B-F4. Entire range, G-e’’. The respective C and T voices share the same range. No evidence of chant. Four textual phrases clearly defined by reduction of voices at beginning of each phrase. Imitation is restricted to short phrases (“sumens illud”) or specific words (e.g., “succurre” and “surgure”). Almost a quarter of the setting is devoted to “peccatorum miserere.” Careful attention allotted to text declamation within a primarily syllabic setting. B emphasizes strong harmonic progressions. Final G.

Alma redemptoris mater, quae pervia caeli porta manes
Et stella maris, succurre cadenti surgere qui curat populo:
Tu quae genuisti, natura mirante, tuum sanctum genitorem:
Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ab ore sumens illud, Ave, peccatorum miserere.
