Scores

Alma redemptoris mater

Polyphonic ensemble SSATB

C I-C1; C II-C1; A-C3; T-C4; B-F4. No evidence of chant. Textual phrases are delineated through motivic material, cadential preparation and voice groupings. Brief imitative passages emphasize selected textual passages (“et stella,” “succurre cadenti” and “peccatorum.” Except for the initial text (“Virgo prius ac posterius, Gabrielis ore”) of the fourth textual phrase for the three upper voices (C I and II, A), the setting is full-voiced. Lassus gives careful attention to text declamation within a primarily syllabic setting. B emphasizes harmonic progressions. Final G.
