Biography

A. Planchart cautiously distinguished two small vicars named "Petit Jehan" in Cambrai in the mid-15th century, the first employed in 1446-1449 and the second in 1454-1465. While the second can be identified as Jean Du Sart, nothing is known of the first beside his employment in Cambrai. It seems likely that the "Petit Jehan" 1 and 2 are in fact the same person, and that, in other words, Jean Du Sart was first employed in the late 1440s and came back for a longer period in 1454 (Planchart PCR/2018, p. 793-794, with note 34, p. 793: "It is possible that Petit Jehan 1 and 2 are the same person.")

"Petit Jehan" is paid as a vicar only for the last term of the fiscal year 1440-1441, in the spring of 1441 (Bouckaert PCR, tables of the vicars of St. Amé in Douai, after F-AD59, 2G2212).

Cathedral of Cambrai, 1446-1449

The acts record that on 21.11.1446 Iohannes [blank], called Petit Jehan, was received as a small vicar (F-CA, MS 1058, f. 87v). He served from 23.11.1446 to 15.5.1449 (F-AD 59, 4 G 7446, f. 6v; 7448, f. 6v); his departure has to be teased from the number of vicars reported on 15 May, which indicate one less vicar than previously, and the full list on 7 June, which omits his name. In 1447–1448 and 1448–1449 he was paid three times for binding books, including two books of polyphony copied by Symon Mellet (F-AD 59, 4 G 4654, f. 28; 4 G 4655, f. 27); significantly, the first of the last two entries for 1448–1449, copied at the end of the fiscal year, refer to him as a former small vicar (Planchart PCR/2018, p. 793, "Petit Jehan 1").
