Chapel of Louis of Male, 1379/80-1384
He was listed as clerk in the court of Louis de Male in 1379 or 1380, and remained employed up to Louis’s interment on 28.2.1384, when he was formally released from his duties along with the other members of Louis’s court chapel (Wright 1979, p. 56). In between this and being recruited into Philip the Bold’s court, he and the former members of Louis’s court chapel were given 80 francs each to provide for their personal needs (id., p. 187, document 44: "pour faire leurs depens et avoir leurs neccessitez").
Chapel of Burgundy, 1384-1388
He was engaged at Philip the Bold’s court as a clerk on 14.4.1384, and was promoted to chaplain on 13.11.1384. By 1388 he left Philip the Bold's court and returned to Flanders (Wright 1979, p. 72).
Canonicates and beneficial career in Flanders, 1382-1417
He had been made canon of St. Pharailde in Ghent in 1382 with the support of the count of Flanders, Louis of Male (Wright 1979, p. 69, after F-AD59, B 1567, f. 138). On 11.5.1392, he was mentionned as holding canonicates at the cathedral of Tournai and the collegiate churches of Notre-Dame in Termonde and St. Pierre in Lille, when he was named as chaplain of Lille’s maison des Malades (Wright 1979, p. 68-69 after Nélis 1934, p. 730). In 1412 he still received income from this maison des Malades in Lille (id., p. 72 after F-AD59, B1899, n° 35389). His death in 1417 is recorded by the documentation of his canonicate of St. Pharailde of Gent (Somers 2016, p. 634).
Father of an illegitimate son who also became a singer
He must be the canon of Tournai of the same name who, as discovered by A. Planchart, had as illegitimate son Du Fay's friend and colleague, Pierre Grosseteste*. He was acquainted with Raoul Le Prestre, nephew of the bishop of Cambrai Pierre d'Ailly, one of Du Fay's earliest patron (Planchart 2018, p. 251 after V-CVaav, RS 226, f. 108-109, RS 269, f. 144-144v, RS 233, f. 31-31v; no date given).
