Biography

The attribution to "Entraigues" of eight musical pieces printed in Lyon (1) and by Le Roy & Ballard in Paris (7) attests to the existence of this musician. S. Pogue suggested that he took his name from his birthplace (art. "Entraigues" [S. Pogue] in GMO). This seems plausible, but many places in southern France bear this name of Occitan origin, meaning "between the waters." There is no basis for favoring one over another, including the one proposed by S. Pogue (ibid.).
A papal singer from the early 16th century also used the pseudonym "Entraigues" (most often spelled "Antregues" by officials of the papal administration), probably referring, in this case, to a village near Avignon. Given that these musicians were active more than twenty years apart, it is highly unlikely that they were the same person.
