Biography

Cathedral of Cambrai, 1424-c. 1430

He is documented as a minor vicar of Cambrai cathedral who held the feast of fools, in an undated entry in the account of the Office of the Grand métier for 1424-25 (Planchart PCR/2018, p. 720-721, after F-AD 59, 4G 5060, f. 18). In 1427-28 he joined the grand community of chaplains (id., 4G 6904, f. 6v) and appears in the lists until 1433-34 (id., 4G 6906, f. 56) even though he was not resident for part of that time.

Papal chapel, 1431-1433 and 1434-1436

He appears in the lists of the papal chapel from 5.3.1431 (Planchart PCR/2018, after I-ASR, Camerale I, 1712, f. 82) and remained there until September 1433 (id., after I-ASR, MC 827, f. 165). At that point, he returned north to ensure his reception to canonicates at St. Piat in Seclin and Notre Dame in Arras, which Eugenius IV had granted him (id., after V-CVaav, RS 288, f. 127-127v and RS 298, f. 49v-50, in which Ragot describes himself as a priest from Arras). Around 6.3.1434, he set back for Rome (id., after 4G 5068, f. 32) and was in the papal chapel from October 1434 to April 1436 (id., after I-ASR, MC 828, f. 10v and 87v ; he is missing from the February 1435 list, according to Lütteken 1993, p. 229, and n. 66).

Ecclesiastical career in Arras, Seclin and Douai, 1436-1465

He resigned the chaplaincy of St. Nicaise at Cambrai for a parish church in Arras in an exchange with Mathieu Aubron on 1.6.1436 (Planchart PCR/2018, after F-CA, ms. 1057, f. 28v-29), and remained a canon of Arras and Seclin, residing in Arras, to his death (id., after F-AD 59, 17G 11, pieces 40-42, according to which A. Planchart places his death "before 23.6.1468", but see below). He had also been received as a canon of Saint-Amé in Douai on 10.5.1436, through his proxy Jean Haguet, canon of Arras, on a canonicate granted by permutation with Pierre Bellon (Fiala PCR, after F-AD 59, 1G16, f. 35v). He attended the annual general chapter of the church on 5.6.1436 (listed amongst the deacons, after the priests), but not on the following 23.6., when he applied, through a proxy, for his first year of residence, asking to be exceptionnaly authorised to postpone it since he had to spend 3 weeks or one month at his place to settle his situation (id. f. 36v and 38). From 1437 onwards, he presented annual privileges of non-residency through procurators (id. f. 54v-55v, 142v, 150 and F-AD 59, 1G17, f. 4v, 19v, 98v, 108v, 117v, 126, 134v, 144v, 160v). On 14.11.1465, a procedure was initiated about the canonicate vacant by his death, for which several candidates were competing (id. f. 194, 200, 206v).
